Has your garage door ever broken? People often don’t realize how important the garage door is until it breaks. There are many more components related to your garage door’s operation than meets the eye.
On every garage door there are several components that make the door go up and down including garage door torsion springs, a garage door torsion tube, drums, bearing plates, hinges, a spring pad, and cables. How can you tell the difference between a bad cable or and a cable that is just not doing its job correctly?
Usually, when a cable starts going bad it starts to braid up or fray. A good indicator that a cable is going bad is when one side of the garage door is a little bit higher than the other side. The side that is lower is the side with the bad cable. It’s generally a good idea to replace both cables when doing this repair. Replacing a cable is not easy and is not recommended unless you have done it before or are very handy.
To perform this repair properly you will need winding bars, a 7/16″ wrench, a flat head screwdriver, vise grips and a good ladder. To replace the cable you must release the tension on the springs. First, loosen the 7/16″ bolts around the cone, then slowly unwind the spring with the winding bars. Make sure you do both springs and leave the cables very loose. Next, loosen up the drums on each side. Finally, use a flat head screwdriver to pop off the old looped cable on the bottom brackets, being very careful not to trap your finger when doing so. Then take the new cables and pop them onto the bottom brackets. Using the vise grips, and starting on the left side, take the cable and wrap the drum around the torsion tube. After it’s wrapped properly, tighten the 7/16″ bolts. Take the vise grips and lock them against the wall so that there is tension on the cable like a guitar wire. On the right side, wrap the cable around the drum as tightly as you can. Once the cable is very tight around the drum you can tighten the two 7/16″ bolts. The hard part is making sure that there is tension that is equal on both sides. If they’re not the same tension the door will not open correctly.
If this repair is done correctly, your garage door will work beautifully and you will have new cables. While you are working on the garage door, consider tightening up all the hinges and lubricating all the moving parts. Make sure you put grease on the opener but don’t overdo it because this could be messy.
